Current Research

I'm currently enrolled in an interdisciplinary Ph.D. position offered by the iCinema Centre for Interactive Cinema Research, Sydney. This position is offered in equal parts by the College of Fine Arts and School of Computer Science. As such my research emphasis is on the cross section of computer science and art. In particular I am interested in the creation of interactive art and its emerging trends. Outside of this lies my passion for experimental cinema and appropriating IP. To get a picture of my practice see the projects section of this site.

This research is taking place under the guidance of my two supervisors, Daniel Woo and Jeffrey Shaw, at the new iCinema Centre, at the University of New South Wales.

Research Interests

CCIs (collaborative and collective interfaces), interactive art, human-computer interaction, virtual reality, augmented reality, installation design, first-use interaction and experimental cinema.

This is the first of two papers that came out of the audio software developed for the Conversations project. I was part of the group who conceived and designed the world first audio software described in these papers, but I played only a minor role in the writing of the papers. The software was written by the excellent team at the CARLab, at the University of Sydney.

Keir Smith and Penny Hagen. "Informing the Everyday Interface: Exploring User-Content Relationships in Interactive Art," Proceedings of Interaction: Systems, Practice and Theory, Sydney, Australia, 2004.
This paper was written in collaboration with Penny Hagen and is the best example of the current thinking that is in an easily digestible form. It was presented at the Interaction: Systems, Practice and Theory conference (Interaction 2004) in Sydney.

Keir Smith. "From Transmission to Multiplicity: Interactive Art Installations as a Site for Research," Proceedings of ACM MM04, ACM Multimedia, New York, USA, 2004.
This short paper would've been presented at ACM Multimedia 2004 (ACM MM 2004), but I was too sick to travel.

Smith, K. "Rewarding the Viuser: A Human-Televisual Data Interface Application," Proceedings of VSMM 2003, Virtual Reality Multimedia, Montreal, Canada, 2003.
This paper was delivered at the Virtual Systems and MultiMedia conference (VSMM 2003) in Montreal.
